What usually goes wrong
Oklahoma summers are long and hot, and that is when air conditioners fail most. Frequent causes are a failed capacitor or contactor in the outdoor unit, a dirty condenser coil, a frozen indoor coil from low airflow, a refrigerant leak or a clogged condensate line that trips a float switch. Some are simple part swaps; a leak or a failing compressor calls for an honest repair-or-replace discussion.
Before you call, swap a dirty filter, clear weeds and debris from around the outdoor unit and check that the breaker and outdoor disconnect are on. If you see ice on the copper lines or indoor coil, switch the thermostat to off and the fan to on so it can thaw while you wait.
If the outdoor unit is grinding, screeching or smells hot, shut it off at the thermostat and leave it off; running a failing motor or compressor longer can turn a small repair into a big one.
