Furnace repair
What usually goes wrong
A furnace that clicks but never lights, lights and then shuts off, or runs the blower with cold air usually has one of a few problems: a dirty flame sensor, a failed hot surface igniter, a limit switch tripped by poor airflow, a pressure switch or drain issue, or a control board. A technician can test each one and tell you the cost before replacing parts.
Start with the basics: thermostat on Heat and set above room temperature, the furnace switch on, the filter clean and the front panel seated firmly, since many furnaces will not run with the door off. On propane systems, check the tank gauge.
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house right away and call your gas company or 911. Do not flip switches or try to relight anything.
