What usually goes wrong
Heat pumps heat and cool with the same outdoor unit, so a problem can show up in either season. In winter, a light coat of frost that melts off during a defrost cycle is normal. A unit that stays wrapped in solid ice, especially after freezing rain, is not, and running it that way can damage the fan and coil.
If the thermostat often shows 'aux heat' or 'emergency heat' and your electric bill jumped, the system may be leaning on its backup electric strips. That keeps you warm, but at a higher cost. Typical causes include a bad defrost board or sensor, low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve or a failing outdoor fan motor.
Do not chip ice off the coil with tools. Make sure gutters are not dripping onto the unit, and call a technician if the ice will not clear.
